History

Monat was founded in 2014.[5] Ray Urdaneta is the company's CEO, Stuart MacMillian is the President, and Marc Juan Lopez is the CFO.[6][7]

In 2017, the company released 21 new products, including Rejuvabeads, designed to target and mend split ends.[8] In 2018, Monat was the 4th fastest growing, Hispanic-owned business, as ranked by the South Florida Business Journal.[9]

In 2018, Monat entered the U.K.[8] In 2019, the company expanded into Ireland and Poland and launched into the skincare market.[10]Its new skincare line sold $4 million worth of product in its first 36 hours.[11] Later in the year, Monat introduced a new ingredient for its skincare products, the kakadu plum.[12]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Monat decided to address the shortage of hand sanitizer and shifted productions at its Miami-Dade plant to make bottles of hand sanitizer.[13] Bottles and additional hand sanitizer were donated to the Florida Division of Emergency Management and nonprofit organizations across the U.S.[13]

Monat has been the subject of numerous lawsuits and hundreds of complaints to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Better Business Bureau, with customers reporting hair damage, balding, and scalp sores, and difficulty ceasing product purchases.[14][15][16][17][18][19] Monat retaliated against some of the complainants by filing defamation lawsuits.[16]

In March 2019, a federal report filed by the FDA after inspecting Monat's Florida manufacturing facility found that multiple products were "prepared, packed, or held under unsanitary conditions whereby (they) may have become contaminated with filth".[17] In October 2019, a ruling by the U.S. district court in Miami, Florida allowed a consumer class action lawsuit against Monat[20] to proceed. The judge in the case ruled that Monat's products had been defectively designed using contaminated chemicals and that the company had failed to inspect their ingredients for contamination.[16]

Business Insider described the company's activities during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic as "predatory" and noted that it was using "memes and coronavirus anxiety to target millions of newly unemployed Americans".[4]
