History
The project was started in 2013 and initially attracted the nickname Surfbury,[1] a mix of Poundbury, a previous new town created by the Duchy of Cornwall in the 1990s, and the prevalence for surfing in Newquay.[2] The new town was named Nansledan, after the area in which it is built in. Nansledan means Broad Valley in Cornish, a theme which continues in the street names and the school (Skol Nansledan - literally School Nansledan.)[3]
The new town is intended to have a High Street, many shops and a school - Nansledan Primary School opened in September 2019[note 1] and can cater for 420 pupils, but only had 152 in the month of its opening.[5] The 540-acre (220 ha) estate had 300 homes sited on it in Summer 2020, by 2043, nearly 4,000 homes are planned to be on the site.[6]
Building materials for the site have come mainly from three quarries in the county of Cornwall;[7]
- slate has come from Trelivett Quarry near Tintagel,
- granite, which is used in kerbing stones, paving, lintels and window sills from De Lank Quarry at Bodmin
- roofing slate has come from Delabole Quarry
The first residents moved into Nansledan in 2015.[6]
Notes
- The school was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in March 2020, but was opened in September 2019 previous due to the start of a new school year.[4]
