History

Kinnick High School was first established as Yokohama American High School in the Yamate district during the occupation following World War II. Then it moved to the Honmoku district of Yokohama, close to where a former Navy Exchange used to be. In 1971, the school permanently relocated to Yokosuka.

Kinnick High School offers programs and areas of study, including culinary arts, drama, music, Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC), and AP courses.

The current principal of Kinnick High School is Craig Maxey, who took up this position beginning in the school year of 2018-2019.

Campus

The campus of Nile C. Kinnick High School is made up of the three-story Main Building, another building containing the main office, and two other buildings that have music classrooms as well as the stage that the school drama club uses in productions. Beginning in 2019, a portion of a nearby warehouse, which students now call the "H-Building," is used for additional classrooms. It is a supposedly temporary, but likely semi-permanent, replacement for the old "C-Building," which had long fallen into disrepair and didn't meet with the requirements of building safety codes. The H-Building is about a ten-minute walk from the main part of campus, and passing times had to be changed to accommodate this.

The teachers in the Main Building are located by department as of the 2016-2017 school year, with Art (including Culinary) and the Science department on the first floor; Computer and the English department on the second floor; History and Foreign Language departments on the third floor; and NJROTC, Math, and Visual Arts departments in the C Building. Note that in 2019, the latter had to be moved to new locations.
