History
Following the closure of the Central Australia Railway, after a new standard gauge line to Alice Springs opened in 1980, the Ghan Preservation Society was formed in 1981 negotiated lease on a 25 kilometre section of the closed line from McDonnell Siding, just south side of Alice Springs, to Ewaninga Siding with Australian National.[1] Work proceeded slowly until a $800,000 grant was made by the Australian Bicentennial Authority in 1987.[2] The line was reopened in October 1988.[3][4]
Services were operated by WAGR W class steam locomotive W924 and Commonwealth Railways NSU class diesel locomotive NSU58 hauling carriages formerly used on The Ghan.[5][6] Services no longer operate, with the rolling stock now on static display.[7]
