Opatovice nad Labem

Opatovice nad Labem is a municipality and village in Pardubice District in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 2,600 inhabitants. It lies between the cities of Pardubice and Hradec Králové.

History

Archaeological research, which was conducted in Opatovice nad Labem in the last decades, confirmed that mild climate and fertile surroundings of the Elbe river had been exploited by ancient peoples. The first record about Opatovice nad Labem comes from the year 1073. The record is from the foundation list of its church which was named the Opatovice Church and was burnt down in the 15th century.[2]

Economy

Opatovice nad Labem was until recently known mainly for its large power station that was first activated in 1959. Now the municipality is especially known for commissioning one of the largest road junctions in the Czech Republic. Many tourist and cyclist trails pass through there.

Nature

Near Opatovice nad Labem there are many quarries suitable for swimming and relaxation. The most used is, thanks to its clear water, the quarry called Opaťák.[2]

Sights

  • St. Lawrence Church is a Roman Catholic church built in the 13th century, it is protected as a cultural sight of the Czech Republic
  • In the place of the former Opatovice Church that was burnt down during the Hussite wars, there is now a landscape park
  • Statue of John of Nepomuk and St. Wenceslaus
  • Memorial to victims of World War I and II in Karlín park
  • Man-made Opatovice Canal that is 32.7 km long and was built in 11th–15th centuries
