Cameron was elected to Antrim Borough Council in 2005 and was elected as the Council's first woman Mayor in 2010.[3] Prior to her election to the Assembly, Cameron was the constituency office manager for the politician Sammy Wilson.[4] Speaking about her election success, Cameron said: "I thought I would do well but I did not think I would get to this stage. I know there are Roman Catholics who voted for me and that I have cross-community support. I hope that continues."[1]

Personal life

Her first marriage ended in 2011; she subsequently married Michael Hobbit Cameron, a Northern Ireland civil servant. The politician's first contact with her future second husband was over the phone, when, as Antrim mayor, she'd asked for help recruiting a member of the royal family for an official function. Four days after her first face to face meeting with Mr Cameron her marriage broke down. The relationship was the subject of a Press Complaints Commission complaint.[5]
