Pericchedi

The Pericchedis were an ancient ruling clan in Andhra. Pericchedis built Bezawada (Modern Vijayawada) off the river Krishna in 626 and another capital in Kollipara, establishing themselves for nine centuries there.

History

The Paricchedis were initially the samantas (vassals) of the Chalukyas.[1] According to V. Sakunthala, the Pericheddis originated from social groups such as the besta (fisherman) and peasant groups of the Shudra varna.[1] Paricchedis were staunch patrons of Hindu Dharma in contrast to the Chalukyas, who initially were patrons of Jainism.[2]
