Overview

Regine Velasquez serves as the host.
Jaya serves as a judge.

The competition begins with auditions period. For forty weeks, three contestants would compete each week in front of a panel of judges. The weekly winner challenges the winner the week before. The winner must be able to defend his or her title for four consecutive weeks in order to automatically qualify for the grand final at the end of the forty weeks. Then, a Pinoy Pop Superstar grand champion is crowned. The first two seasons' grand showdown took place in Araneta Coliseum on May 2005 and 2006 respectively, and was judged by Floy Quintos, Jaya, Danny Tan, Kyla, and Jay-R.

On the third season, however, there had become new rules. After the three contenders sing their songs on their own rendition, the second round would force them to sing their song, but not in their music type. For the weekly winner of four consecutive weeks, he or she will qualify for the preelimination showdown. The remaining finalists will compete for the grand showdown.

Rules were then again changed after the Pinoy Pop Superstar Year 3 Special: Fast Forward to Superstardom (this special consists of 12 wildcard finalists wherein Joyce Tanana won). On the first round, six contenders sing their song in favor to their capacity and genre. Three of them will be eliminated with judges' average scores. On the second round, the remaining three contenders will sing a different kind/genre of song. The weekly challenger will compete with the defending winner. The winner shall defend his title for four consecutive weeks (this time the defending winner can only reign his title for four weeks). The gathered finalists will compete for the grand showdown.

The winner received a house from Crown Asia in 2005 and Filinvest in 2006, a Toyota Innova in 2005 and Chevrolet Optra in 2006, a recording contract with GMA Records, and one million Philippine pesos.
