Pretoria Bypass

The Pretoria Bypass is a collection of two bypasses that together form a partial ring road around the city of Pretoria, South Africa. At the moment, the two bypasses do not form a complete ring road.

The highest-order road in the city is the N1 Eastern Bypass, linking Pretoria to Johannesburg in the south and Polokwane (formerly known as Pietersburg) in the north. It winds its way through the affluent eastern suburbs of the metropolitan area and is an e-toll highway (with open road tolling) in the southern parts while being an ordinary toll road in the northern parts.

The second bypass is the new N4 Northern Bypass, linking Pretoria to Rustenburg in the west and Witbank in the east. This is a toll road, and forms part of the Platinum Bakwena Toll Road, which ultimately links Maputo in Mozambique to Gaborone in Botswana via Pretoria. The N4 and the N1 are one highway on the Eastern Bypass from the Doornpoort Interchange (where the Northern Bypass coming from Rustenburg ends) southwards up to the Proefplaas Interchange east of Pretoria CBD, where the N4 now becomes its own highway eastwards to Witbank.
