Prince Nikolai of Denmark

Prince Nikolai of Denmark, Count of Monpezat (Nikolai William Alexander Frederik; born 28 August 1999) is a member of the Danish royal family. He is the elder son of Prince Joachim and his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. He is currently seventh in the line of succession to the Danish throne.[1] At the time of his birth, he was third, after his uncle and father.

Biography

Prince Nikolai was born at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on 28 August 1999. His father is Prince Joachim and his mother is Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. Prince Nikolai is the oldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and her husband, Prince Henrik. Nikolai has a younger brother, Prince Felix, and two half-siblings from his father's second marriage, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena.[1]

Nikolai was christened in the chapel of the Fredensborg Palace on 6 November 1999 by the royal vicar Christian Thodberg. At the christening the musical work Lys på din vej, composed by Frederik Magle and dedicated to Prince Nikolai, was performed for the first time.[2] His godparents are the Crown Prince of Denmark (paternal uncle), Nicola Baird (maternal ant), the Earl of Wessex, Peter Steenstrup, and Camilla Flint.[1] After their divorce in 2005, Prince Joachim and Alexandra had joint custody of Prince Nikolai and his brother.[3][4][5]

Like his father and uncle, Nikolai attended Krebs School in Copenhagen.[1] In 2014, he attended 10th grade at Herlufsholm School in Næstved and after received his upper secondary education there as well.[6]

Nikolai was confirmed on 18 May 2013 in Fredensborg Palace Church in the presence of his immediate family and all his godparents.[7]

In June 2018, it was reported that Prince Nikolai was dating Benedikte Thoustrup, daughter of former Sydbank chairman Anders Thoustrup.[8]

In early 2018, Nikolai signed as a fashion model with the agency Scoop Models.[9] He made his runway debut in February 2018 at Burberry's show at London Fashion Week.[10][11] Nikolai has said he sees modeling as a job rather than a career.[12]

In August 2018, the prince began a two-year military program at the Royal Danish Army's Sergeant School in Varde.[13][14] However, he dropped out two months later as he felt a career in the military did not suit him.[15] In July 2019, he was admitted to Copenhagen Business School to study the Bachelor in Business Administration and Service Management.[16]

Titles and styles

Nikolai is styled as "His Highness Prince Nikolai of Denmark, Count of Monpezat". He has been Prince of Denmark since birth and Count of Monpezat since 29 April 2008, when Queen Margrethe granted the title to her male-line descendants.[17]
