On 17 January 2013, then Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew announced that the North East line will be extended northwards to Punggol North station, serving as the future northern terminus of the North East line. To coincide with the development of Punggol North and the new Punggol Downtown, the station will be constructed in tandem and with expected completion in 2030.[1]
On 7 June 2017, then-Second Minister for Transport Ng Chee Meng announced that the single station extension will open in 2023, 7 years ahead of the original completion date of 2030. The station was renamed Punggol Coast station. The extension will span 1.6 km and will serve the future Punggol North area, including the Punggol Digital District.[2][3][4]
Tenders for the construction of NELe tunnels, station and construction works were called in June 2017. Contract 715 for the design and construction of Punggol Coast Station and associated tunnels was awarded to China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited (Singapore Branch) at a sum of S$79 million on December 2017. Construction started in 2017, with completion in 2024.[5][6][7]
On 13 November 2020, Minister of Transport Ong Ye Kung announced that the station would be completed in 2024 instead due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This comes even as works progressed to 40% completion with the tunnels finished.[8][9]
