Rajkumar filmography
Rajkumar acted in 205 Kannada movies in lead roles between 1954-2000. His movies have enjoyed a success rate in excess of 90%.[1] "Nata Sarvabhouma" meaning Emperor of acting was the title given to him by Gubbi Veeranna which appears in documentary. Having experience from his drama works, he excelled in mythological, devotional and historical movies. However, since the 1960s he was found increasingly working in action, spy thrillers, romantic and social-theme based movies. His movies in the 70s and 80s were considered to be a bridge between commercial and art house movies because of the theme of the story and their treatment. He was also a well-known singer, as a playback singer as well as of devotional songs.
From 1963 to 1971, he had at least 9 releases every year. From 1962 to 1972, he had a minimum of 8 releases every year. In 1963, he had 15 releases in which he was the lead whereas in 1968, he had 16 releases in which he was the lead.
There are opinions that his movies sold 1.45 times more tickets than any other actor in India over a 20 year period from 1963 to 1983 making him the actor whose movies made most money for its time compared to the budget of the movies and market of the industry.[2]
Rajkumar was the first Indian actor whose movies were remade more than 50 times in other languages. He was also the first hero in India whose movies were remade in six other languages.[3] In 2002, his 1986 movie Anuraga Aralithu became the first Indian movie to be remade in six other languages.[4] His 33 movies have been remade 55 times in 7 languages by 32 actors.[5][6]
