Gameplay

Like Resident Evil 7 (2017), Resident Evil Village uses a first-person perspective. The inventory management system is similar to that of Resident Evil 4 (2005), featuring a briefcase. The game also features a merchant called The Duke, who sells the player weapons and healing items.[4]

Resident Evil Village will include a six-player online multiplayer game, Resident Evil RE:Verse.[5]

Synopsis

Resident Evil Village is set a few years after Resident Evil 7. Ethan Winters returns as the protagonist.[6] Capcom said of the story, "Ethan's world suddenly comes crashing down once again when Chris Redfield, an unexpected yet familiar face makes an appearance, setting off a chain of events that sees a distraught Ethan seeking answers to Chris' shocking actions, and ultimately finding him in a mysterious village."[6] The game also features an antagonist known as Lady Dimitrescu.[7][8]

Development

Resident Evil Village had been in development for approximately three and a half years prior to its announcement in June 2020.[9] Like Resident Evil 7 (2017), it was developed with the RE Engine. While it is recognized by Capcom as the eighth main game in the series, and its logo stylized to include the Roman numeral "VIII" for 8, the producers stylized the title to emphasise on the "village" aspect rather than the "8". In a Famitsu interview, producers Tsuyoshi Kanda and Peter Fabiano said that they considered the village a character, and wanted to reflect that in the stylization of the title so that players would remember it.[9][10]

Maiden, the first of two demos,[11] was released for the PlayStation 5 on January 21, 2021.[12]

Promotion

To promote the game, Capcom announced that a special lottery event will be held to give away a free Resident Evil Village acrylic jigsaw puzzle if Twitter users use the hashtag #VILLAGE予約.[13]

Reception

Upon release of the first trailer and the Maiden demo in January 2021, fans took to the antagonist vampire character Lady Dimitrescu,[14] inspiring an outpouring of fan art,[15][16] cosplays,[17][18] and internet memes.[19] Fan interest was drawn by her unusual height, which Tomonori Takano confirmed was 2.9 metres (9 ft 6 in) tall, "if you include her hat and high heels".[20][21] This led to further fan art and memes based on Takano's statement.[22][23][21][17][24]
