Roanoke Island, North Carolina half dollar
The Roanoke Island, North Carolina half dollar (also Roanoke Island half dollar) is a commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint in 1937. The coin commemorated the 350th anniversary of the Roanoke Colony.[1]

Production and sales
Unlike most United States commemorative coins, the Roanoke Island half dollar did not have a maximum authorized mintage. However, Pub.L. 74–790 did impose a minimum mintage of 25,000, with a provision stated that no coins could be struck after July 1, 1937. The Philadelphia Mint struck 25,000 pieces in January, and a further 25,000 in June.[2] 15 extra coins were struck in each batch for assay.[3]
A total of 29,000 coins were sold, with the remainder being returned to the mint for melting.[2]
