Sabarmati Junction railway station

Sabarmati Junction railway station is a junction station under Western Railway and a junction just six kilometers away from main Ahmedabad railway station in Gujarat state of India. It is junction on AhmedabadMehsana railway line. It is more famous for Sabarmati Ashram located near it, which was founded by Mahatma Gandhi. Sabarmati serves both metre-gauge track on Mehsana line and main broad-gauge line for all trains departing from Ahmedabad[1]. Sabarmati also has special yard for Passenger trains. Sabarmati railway station in western part of the city is being proposed to be developed as an additional terminal for departure and termination of Delhi-bound trains. The railway officials said that there are plans to develop Sabarmati railway station as an alternate station of Ahmedabad railway station[2].

Infrastructure and Amenities

Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited(IRSDC),has selected Sabarmati railway station in the state of Gujarat to be redeveloped on the basis of Public-Private Partnership(PPP) model[3].Recently IRSDC,a JV by the Rail Land Development Authority(RLDA) and the state owned engineering company IRCON,invited Request for Qualification(RFQs),for the redevelopment of station and 9 applications from developers and fund houses were received[4][5].The station building is planned to have the theme of famous Dandi March or salt movement led by Mahatma Gandhi for the freedom struggle.The station redevelopment plan aims to revamp and connect the existing two Sabarmati stations,Sabarmati station-meter gauge(SBI-MG) and the Sabarmati Junction station-broad gauge(SBT-BT) for the convenience of passengers.The proposed Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train,developed by the National High Speed Rail Corportation Limited(NHSRCL),is expected to pass between the stations and hence the stations will be redeveloped and integrated with each other,providing smooth and easy access for passengers.The integration of stations will have passage for accessing high speed bullet train corridor.

Following are the salient features of Sabarmati Railway Station Redevelopment project[3]:

1.Sabarmati station proposed to be redeveloped at the cost of around Rs 125 crores and the proposed site area of the development is around 19,55,500 square metres.

2.The two existing Sabarmati railway stations will be modified and renovated with world-class facilities with the theme being Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March,with exact design still under discussions.

3.Redeveloped station area will have access to the new metro station, which is under construction in short distance,allowing easy transfers for passengers between Sabarmati Railway station to the metro station.

4.Redeveloped station is being planned with passenger friendly facilities such as high quality waiting rooms,retail shops,food and beverage stalls,entertainment avenues and many more facilities for the convenience of travellers.

5.There is a proposal to develop the exit,entry and block area in an area of approx 7,790 square metres.Entry and exit points from the station will be through separate foot over bridges(FOB) and waiting area with seats will be provided for the convenience of passengers.

6.Redevelopment plan includes proper design of spaces for ensuring accurate lighting,signage as well as inclusion of modern amenities.

7.Redeveloped station will be made Divyang-friendly for the comfort of differently-abled passengers and will be green building.
