San Francisco Fringe Festival

The San Francisco Fringe Festival, or SF Fringe, is a fringe theater festival produced by the EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. It is one of the oldest fringe festivals in the United States.[1] It takes place over the course of two weeks every September; the 2018 Festival will take place September 6–15.[2]

Performances featured at SF Fringe are chosen by lottery.[3] The 2017 festival featured about 150 performances by more than 35 theater companies, performing in three small theater venues.[4] General 2018 applications ended on February 14, but the San Francisco Fringe Festival will still accept applications until April 1 to perform additional site specific work in Non Traditional Fringe Venue (NTFV),[5] which have included "bars and restaurants, on buses, park benches and trees.[6] Audience members are encouraged to write about and review shows through the EXIT Theatre website,[7] or through official Android[8] or iOS[9] mobile applications. Many of the shows feature mature themes or nudity.[10]

The conclusion of the festival features additional performances by shows chosen as the "Best of the Fringe".[11]
