History
Shaft was founded in September 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao, a former employee of Mushi Production.[1][2] In 1987, the studio released its first independent production, an original video animation entitled Yume kara, Samenai (夢から、さめない).[3] From 2001 to 2005, Shaft collaborated with Gainax in the production of several anime television series (Mahoromatic, This Ugly yet Beautiful World, He is My Master).[4]
In 2004, Hiroshi Wakao retired as Shaft's president and was succeeded by production manager Mitsutoshi Kubota. Later that year, Kubota hired Akiyuki Shinbo to direct the anime television series Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase, impressed with his unique direction for the series The SoulTaker (2001) and Le Portrait de Petit Cossette (2004).[5] Shinbo brought a number of new talents to Shaft following Moon Phase (including Shin Ōnuma, Tatsuya Oishi, Yukihiro Miyamoto, Tomoyuki Itamura, Naoyuki Tatsuwa, and Yuki Yase), with whom he has frequently collaborated on almost all subsequent anime productions. Shaft has since developed a distinct visual style characterized by striking color palettes, closeup and angular shots, abstract background designs, rapid cuts, changes in style, the incorporation of real photographs, and a tilted head pose, among other features.[6] Kubota has attributed the studio's "house style" to its strategy of maintaining a consistent team across a diverse variety of productions.[5]
In 2010, the studio was awarded the Hisashi Maeda Award at the 9th Annual Otaku Japan Awards.[7]
For many of the studio's works, such as the long-running Monogatari franchise, the studio's members have served as series composers under the collective pseudonym Fuyashi Tō (東富耶子 or 東冨耶子, Tō Fuyashi), and are usually credited alongside Akiyuki Shinbo. Shinbo has stated that the responsibility held by this position is mainly choosing what is eventually adapted for animation, which he does through meetings with the studio's staff members.[8][9]
