Plot
The seventh season begins one month after the season six finale. Fiona is finally trying to take control of her life, having become the manager of Patsy's Pies. Frank wakes up in a coma following the bridge incident. Lip is still struggling with alcoholism, attempting to keep his drinking levels in moderation. Carl aims towards getting into military school.
At Patsy's, Fiona revamps the diner in order to increase the diner's audience. When a local laundromat building goes up for sale, Fiona buys the laundromat after speaking with the senile owner, Etta (June Squibb), who has Alzheimer's. With the help of Frank and Kevin, Fiona revamps the laundromat and, forgiving her father, lets Frank stay with Etta in her apartment. Meanwhile, Kevin and Veronica are forced to find new jobs when Svetlana manipulates them into giving her full ownership of the bar. Frank briefly opens up a homeless shelter in the neighborhood, in which Ian meets Trevor (Elliot Fletcher), a male transgender activist visiting the shelter.
Lip begins a relationship with Sierra (Ruby Modine), a single mother whom Fiona hires as a waitress at Patsy's. Sierra raises her young son alone, because her ex-boyfriend is an addict. Debbie gets engaged to Sierra's handicapped brother in order to provide Franny with a home life. Lip attends an appeal at his college that Professor Youens had orchestrated. However, the committee refuses to expunge Lip's disciplinary record and does not let him re-enrol. This culminates in Lip briefly relapsing back to alcohol, and when he drunkenly attacks Sierra's ex-boyfriend, Sierra promptly breaks up with Lip, not wanting her son to deal with two addicts.
Though business at the revamped laundromat goes well, Fiona sells the building for a major profit, and subsequently sends Etta to live at a nursing home. After Ian pursues a relationship with Trevor, Mickey escapes from prison and makes an unexpected return in Ian's life. Ian and Mickey reunite and briefly rekindle their relationship, but Ian is conflicted when Mickey asks him to accompany him to Mexico. Though Ian accompanies Mickey on the way to the Mexican border, Ian refuses to go through with the plan while at the border. Heartbroken, Mickey shares a final kiss with Ian before successfully crossing the border with a disguise. Ian later apologizes to Trevor for cheating on him.
The Gallaghers' lives are marred by the brief reappearance of Monica, who has returned to Chicago with declining health. Monica tries to make amends with her kids, though they are all generally dismissive of her. Monica reconciles with Frank, and the two resort back to their old habits. Monica reveals that she has irreparable brain damage most likely caused by an infected needle; she also reveals she has inheritance for her children. In the penultimate episode, Frank and Monica decide to renew their vows, and Monica passes away from a brain aneurysm the next morning. Frank later discovers Monica's inheritance for the kids - a stash of 70 pounds of crystal meth.
Fiona, indifferent of her mother's death, prepares a small funeral for Monica, and Frank gives each family member a portion of the inherited meth. At the funeral home, Fiona curses her mother for her troubles, and she buries her portion of the meth in Monica's coffin. The season concludes with a montage of each family member continuing on with their lives: Debbie begins taking welding classes; Ian continues his EMT job, and Lip continues to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with a new sponsor, Brad (Scott Michael Campbell); Fiona becomes the owner of a local apartment building; Carl and Frank graffiti a wall with Monica's name on it to honor her memory.
