Shushikend

Shushikend (Armenian: Շուշիքենդ; Azerbaijani: Şuşakənd, Shushakend) or Shosh (Armenian: Շոշ) is a village de jure in the Khojaly District of Azerbaijan, de facto in the Askeran Province of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh. There are three Armenian churches in the village, one in the village centre, St. Stepanos of 1655 on the village cemetery grounds, and above the village on a hill in the north, there is a church with an adjacent cemetery with khachkars.[2] The village has an ethnic Armenian-majority population, and also had an Armenian majority in 1989.[3] The village had 544 inhabitants in 2005.[4]

History

The village was captured by Armenian forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. After the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, five Armenian families displaced from Gulably settled in the village, as well as in Khojaly.[5][6]

Notable People

  • Arsen Terteryan, an Armenian Soviet scientist and writer who was born in the village.
