Shyamkanu Mahanta

Shyamkanu Mahanta (Assamese: শ্যামকানু মহন্ত; born 1 March 1972) is an Indian cultural and social activist from Assam. Mahanta is known for organizing various festivals such as Srimanta Sankaradeva Movement, Samannay, North East Festival and Rongali to promote the culture of Northeast India.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Mahanta was born in Sivasagar to parents Mr. Lila Mahanta, former president of Assam Sattra Mahasabha, the apex body of Sattras of Assam and Mrs. Nirupama Mahanta, a Sattriya exponent and writer.[4] Mahanta passed out in engineering and later did management course.[5]

  • Hydropower projects

Mahanta was involved in implementation of large power plants and hydropower projects in Northeast India.[5][6]

  • Tourism awareness

Mahanta took the initiative to promote the Northeast India's trade, tourism and culture in Thailand. North East India festival was organized by him in Bangkok in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand. This festival's main purpose was to promote people to people exchange between both regions under Act East policy.[7][8][9]

  • Education

Mahanta is a government nominee member of Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology.[10]

Cultural activism

Mahanta is the chief organizer of North East Festival, Delhi an annual festival held in Delhi which showcases the culture and customs of Northeast India.[11]

Television career

Mahanta hosts a special television program Jogatmak Dristire with Shyamkanu Mahanta on Prag News which is based on current affairs.[12]
