Singaporeans in Malaysia

Singaporeans in Malaysia refers to people that holds Singaporean citizenship or are of Singaporean descent who either temporarily reside or were born in Malaysia. With a population of about 91,002 in 2019, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, they are the largest community of overseas Singaporeans.[1]

Overview

Most Singaporeans residing in Malaysia are usually high-income expatriates as professionals are sought out for a niche expertise and experience in various industries within the country. They are usually white collar workers with positions in upper management or middle management within companies, as such most Singaporean residents are usually concentrated near large urban centres such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca and Johor Bahru.[2]

Johor

According to an 2014 estimate by the Johor–Singapore Community Care Association, there are about 5,000 Singaporean families who owns a second home in Johor.[3] Under the Malaysia's My Second Home programme, Singaporean retirees and some Singaporeans working or studying in Singapore have chosen to reside in Johor due to the lower cost of living, and they are also allowed to import one vehicle into Malaysia or purchase one that was locally made with duty and sales tax exemptions. However, Singaporeans are restricted from driving personal Malaysia-registered vehicles into Singapore.[4] As such, Malaysia (especially the state of Johor) has also often been considered as Singapore's unofficial "hinterland", as these areas are largely rural or are significantly less developed than the city-state itself.[5]
