Sonique (entertainer)

Kylie Sonique Love[1][2] (born May 2, 1983) is an American singer, dancer, and reality television personality. She is best known for competing on the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race, and for being the first contestant on the show to come out as a trans woman.

Early life

Sonique was born on May 2, 1983, in Albany, Georgia as Jason Lee Edwards.[3][4] She came out as transgender to her mother at 15 and later was sent to military school to try to be "more masculine". She received a GED at the Albany Technical College.[3]

Career

Sonique was announced to be one of twelve contestants for season two of RuPaul's Drag Race on February 1, 2010.[5] She was placed in the bottom two in episode four and lost a lip sync to "Two of Hearts" by Stacey Q against Morgan McMichaels.[6] She revealed that she is a transgender woman during the reunion episode.[7]

She was one of 30 drag queens for Miley Cyrus' 2015 Video Music Awards performance.[8]

In June 2018, Sonique was a backup dancer with McMichaels and Farrah Moan for Christina Aguilera at LA Pride.[9] She appeared in the RuPaul's Drag Race Holi-slay Spectacular with seven other Drag Race alumni on December 7, 2018.[10][11] She appeared as a guest for the first challenge in the premiere of season eleven of Drag Race.[12]

She appeared in a music video for Lizzo's song "Juice" on April 17, 2019.[13]

Music

Sonique contributed to Tammie Brown's 2018 EP A Little Bit of Tammie.[14] She released her first single "Santa, Please Come Home" the same day as the Holi-slay Spectacular.[15] She released her second single, "Hey Hater" on April 24, 2019.[16]
