Stretton-under-Fosse

Stretton-under-Fosse is a village and civil parish in the English county of Warwickshire. In 2001 its population was recorded as 185, increasing to 234 at the 2011 Census.[1]

Not to be confused with Stretton-on-Fosse.

The village contains a number of old cottages along its main street. Just outside Stretton is an old manor house, Newbold Revel, which was purchased in 1911; by RNID Founder, Benefactor and 1st President, Mr Leo Bernard William Bonn, of Bonn House, 22, Upper Brook Street, Mayfair, London. In honour of whom, the RNID Royal Patron, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, unveiled a memorial plaque (9 June 1998) subsequently holding a reception at Buckingham Palace in honour of Mr Leo Bonn (10 June 2011). Newbold Revel was later donated by the Bonn's to be a military hospital, during the First World War, where many brave local people recuperated from their war wounds; and on the death of Mr Leo Bernard William Bonn, in 1929; he was buried at the Monks Kirby Churchyard; being afterwards succeeded by his only son and heir, the decorated War Hero, Major Walter Basil Louis Bonn, DSO, MC, MA (Oxon.) FRSA, FZSL, Welsh Guards, Freeman of the City of London. Major Walter Bonn generously donated the Village Hall to the people of the village, in 1931. His two sons, Jurat of the Royal Court, Lt. Michael Walter Bonn, Kt. Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Welsh Guards (1927-2008); and his brother, Major Christopher Leslie Leo Bonn, GCEM, ADC, Welsh Guards, Adjutant of Eton College (1928-2008) were brought up, at Newbold Revel, before later studying at Eton College. Major Walter Bonn sold Newbold Revel to the Seven Day Adventists Church (1932); and he afterwards purchased, and later resided at Marsden Manor. Newbold Revel is currently used as a training college for prison officers. Nearby is the Oxford Canal and a canal arm leading to Stretton Wharf.

Stretton means "settlement on a Roman road" (from the Old English stræt and tun). In this case the road is Fosse Way.

Historic buildings

There are 13 buildings listed by Historic England.[2] These include several houses in Main Street, a cast iron canal bridge [3] and the early Victorian church of St. Peter.[4]
