It is a community school administered by Dorset County Council. Admissions to the school usually includes pupils that usually attend Hazelbury Bryan School, Okeford Fitzpaine CE VA Primary School, Shillingstone CE VA Primary School, Stalbridge CE Primary School, St Nicholas CE VA Primary School, William Barnes Primary School and Yewstock School.[3]

Sturminster Newton High School offers GCSEs, BTECs and the CiDA as programmes of study for pupils. Sturminster Newton High Schools sixth form provision is offered in conjunction with Shaftesbury School in Shaftesbury, and students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A-levels and further BTECs.[4]

In 2018, Year 11 student Laurence Hayward was elected as a member of the Youth Parliament after campaigning to improve gender equality and mental health support for young people during exams. He was the first (and only) student from Sturminster Newton High School to achieve this.[5]
