Sudip Bandyopadhyay

Sudip Bandyopadhyay (born 10 December 1952) is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament from Kolkata Uttar Constituency of West Bengal,India. Sudip Bandyopadhyay has been a member of the Lok Sabha for five terms, serving in the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th Lok Sabhas. He represents the Kolkata Uttar constituency of West Bengal and is a member of the Trinamool Congress political party.[1] He is the Leader of the Lok Sabha of the All India Trinamool Congress Party. He has also represented India at the United Nations two times, first in Geneva and second in New York where he delivered his speech in the Central Hall of the General Assembly.

Early life and education

Sudip Bandyopadhyay was born in a traditional and respectable family residing at Berhampore in the district of Murshidabad, West Bengal. His father, late Bisweswar Bandyopadhyay being a State Government Official efficiently served the office of the Murshidabad Collectorate and his mother, late Jyotsna Bandyopadhyay was housewife. He was graduated from Krishnath College, Berhampore obtaining his B.Sc. Degree with Distinction under the University of Calcutta. In the early days of his life as a student in the college, Shri Bandyopadhyay was an outspoken personality towards any kind of injustice to his inmates of the college and he was also kept himself involved with the various social activities of the locality. In the next phase of like he became a Social Worker by profession.

Political career

Sudip Bandyopadhyay came to active politics in the year 1970 at his very early age and since then he is associated with various political activities of the State and the Nation. At the beginning of his political career, he was firstly designated as Secretary, Chhatra Parishad (Frontal Wing of INC), West Bengal in the year 1970–71. He was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for four terms and Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha) for five terms being a total of nine terms as an elected member in both the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha during his political career. Shri Bandyopadhyay did submit his resignation twice from West Bengal Legislative Assembly to contest for Lok Sabha elections. He is one of the brilliant, dynamic and articulate speaker of Lok Sabha since the beginning of his parliamentary career. He is very much eminent with his presence in the Lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha). He held several posts, i.e. President, West Bengal Youth Congress from 1972 to 1975, General Secretary, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee and Member, All India Congress Committee for a long period of 30 years, Union Minister of State, Health and Family Welfare. Presently, he is senior most Vice-President of All India Trinamool Congress Party and also Leader of the AITC Parliamentary Party in Lok Sabha. In the 16th Lok Sabha, Shri Bandyopadhyay was appointed as Chairperson, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways and in the 17th Lok Sabha, again he is assigned with the post of Chairperson, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution. Besides, he has served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Finance, Defence, Urban Development and is also associated with the Public Accounts Committee, Committee on Public Undertakings, Government Assurance Committee, Business Advisory Committee, Consultative Committee of Ministry of Civil Aviation etc. Shri Sudip Bandyopadhyay has been nominated earlier and also presently continuing as a Member of Samsad (Court) of Viswa-Bharati, Shantiniketan founded by Kavi Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India is the Chancellor of the University. Shri Bandyopadhyay is also a Member of the Executive Committee, Indian Parliamentary Group headed by Hon'ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Thus, he has already completed 50 years of political life.

Countries visited abroad include Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Singapore, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America etc. (on his official and unofficial tour).

On 3 January 2017, Bandyopadhyay was arrested after interrogation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his non co-operation in ongoing investigation and alleged involvement in the Ponzi firm Rose Valley Group.[2]
