Supergirl (season 6)

The sixth and final season of the American television series Supergirl, which is based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El / Supergirl, is scheduled to premiere on The CW in mid-2021, and will consist of 20 episodes. It is set in the Arrowverse, sharing continuity with the other television series of the universe, and is a spin-off of Arrow. The season is produced by Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Entertainment, with Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner serving as showrunners.

The season was ordered in January 2020. Filming began that October. Melissa Benoist stars as Kara, with principal cast members Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair and David Harewood also returning from previous seasons.

Episodes

Episode 12 of the season was written by Azie Tesfai and J. Holtham, with David Ramsey directing. It marks the first time in the Arrowverse that an actor wrote an episode.[1] Another episode is Chyler Leigh's directorial debut.[2]

Development

In January 2020, The CW renewed the series for a sixth season.[5] Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner return as the showrunners.[6] In September 2020, it was announced that it would be the final season, with a 20 episode order.[7] Nellie Andreeva from Deadline Hollywood stated the season's production delays, as well as the series' declining ratings, informed the decision to end the series with an extended final season.[8]

Casting

Main cast members Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair and David Harewood will return as Kara Danvers / Supergirl, Alex Danvers, Lena Luthor, Querl Dox / Brainiac 5, Nia Nal / Dreamer,[9] Kelly Olsen,[1] Andrea Rojas,[10] William Dey[11] and J'onn J'onzz / Martian Manhunter.[12] In December 2020, David Ramsey was revealed to be reprising his Arrow role of John Diggle in addition to directing at least one episode in the season.[4]

Filming

Filming began on October 13, 2020.[13] It was initially scheduled to begin after Benoist returned from maternity leave,[14] but was later rescheduled to begin on September 28, 2020.[8] However, by September 29, filming was temporarily postponed, because of delays in receiving COVID-19 test results for the cast and crew,[15][16] before beginning in October.[13] The early filming of the season will film around Benoist's absence until she returns to work in January 2021.[8][17] Filming is expected to conclude on August 6, 2021.[13]

Marketing

In early August 2020, The CW released several posters of the Arrowverse superheroes wearing face masks, including Supergirl, with all posters having the caption "Real Heroes Wear Masks". This marketing tactic was used to "raise public awareness on the efficacy of facial coverings preventing the spread of COVID-19".[18]

Broadcast

The sixth season is scheduled to premiere in mid-2021,[19] and run for 20 episodes.[8]
