Telephone numbers in Puerto Rico
Telephone numbers in Puerto Rico are assigned under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).
Prior to March 1, 1996, Puerto Rico was one of many Caribbean islands served by area code 809. On that date Puerto Rico was assigned the new area code 787 (with the mnemonic PUR or PTR). Permissive dialing of 809 ended January 31, 1997.
As elsewhere in the NANP region, increasing use of modems and mobile telephones strained the supply of seven-digit numbers within area 787, and an overlay plan came into effect in or about September 2001. Puerto Rico now has two area codes, 787 and 939. The new code is used mostly for wireless phones.
Because of the overlay, the area code must be dialed for all calls.
In popular culture
- In The Simpsons episode "A Tale of Two Springfields" which first aired on November 5, 2000, 939 is one of two area codes (the other being 636) assigned to the fictional town of Springfield.[1]
- In the sixth season of America's Best Dance Crew, a crew from Puerto Rico is named the 787 Crew. They later appeared on Season 7 of America's Got Talent.
- The 787 area code was mentioned in the theme music of the Latin American Xchange stable in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
