Tirupati railway station

Tirupati railway station (station code:TPTY[1]) railway station, located in the India state of Andhra Pradesh, serves Tirupati and the regular flow of large number of pilgrims visiting Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Chittoor district. It is one best environment stations and has been awarded gold rating by the Indian Green Building Council.[2] There are a number of other railway stations that come under the Tirupati urban limits, namely Yerpedu railway station, Renigunta Junction railway station, Tirupati West Halt railway station and Chandragiri railway station. Another station called Tiruchanoor railway station is currently being constructed between Renigunta Junction and Tirupati Central railway station.

History

A metre-gauge line of South Indian Railway Company, opened in 1891, started from Villupuram in South Arcot district and passed through Katpadi and Chittoor to Pakala.[3] The Katpadi–Gudur line, covering Tirupati, has since been converted to broad gauge.[4]

Classification

Tirupati is classified as an A1–category station in the Guntakal railway division.[5] It is also one among the top hundred booking stations of Indian Railway.[6]

Structure and amenities

The station has roof top solar panels installed by the Indian railways, along with various railway stations and service buildings in the country, as a part of sourcing 500 MW solar energy.[7][8]

The following facilities have been developed recently with an estimated cost of around Rs 11 Crores:[9]

1.A new waiting hall in platforms 4 and 5 for the convenience of all travellers with a seating capacity for 210 people in over 1200 square meter area.

2.Has a high speed Wi-Fi and Led TV facilities.

3.A spacious cloak room in platform No.1 with an area of 100 square meters.Around 50 steel racks have been installed in the room for the safe deposit of passenger luggages.

4.Existing booking office,announcement facility and display boards area have been renovated.

5.A premium lounge had been developed in over 350 square meters on platform no.1 with estimated cost of around 1.06 crores having state of the art facilities.The facilities for travellers in the lounge includes comfortable and spacious waiting facility,separate rooms for men and women,free internet,cold and hot beverages,newspapers/magazines,TV/Instrumental music,washrooms,locker/luggage racks and other miscellaneous facilities.
