Ukraine–Vietnam relations

Vietnam has recognized Ukrainian state on 27 December 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 23 January 1992. Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Ukraine started its operations in 1993. Embassy of Ukraine in Vietnam was opened in 1997.

Political and economic relations

Vietnam maintains good relations with Ukraine when Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union, that is due to largely existence of Vietnamese people in Ukraine and Ukraine is also the main source of military equipments selling to Vietnam. Ukraine has played a role on helping Vietnam to upgrade and modernize its military.[1]

When the Ukrainian crisis started in 2013, Vietnam maintains neutral, however.

Two countries have sought to expand their trade and economic tie as for 2018.[2] For Vietnam, Ukraine is an important trade partner in Europe, thanked for long, historical tie between two nations dated back from the Soviet era.[3]

Vietnamese people in Ukraine, although small in number, is among the largest in Europe, with over 50.000 to 100.000 Vietnamese living in Ukraine. Ukrainians regard the Vietnamese community positively, based on historical common between two.[4] The Vietnamese community also serves as a bridge connection between the Vietnamese in other Slavic nations such as Poland, Russia and Czech Republic, where large Vietnamese diasporas exist.

The Ukrainian community is living on the territory of Vietnam at the end of June 2015 is not numerous: there are only 120 persons in the consular register of the Embassy. At the same time the unofficial estimates do not exceed one thousand of citizens of Ukraine, actually residing in Vietnam.

In the Socialist Republic of Vietnam there are neither organizations of Ukrainian community, nor religious communities of immigrants from Ukraine, partly due to its large distance and lack of interests.

A vast majority of citizens from Ukraine living in Vietnam are the labor migrants. They mainly consider their stay in Vietnam as a temporary and plan to return home after a labor contract with the company-employer finishes. Ukrainian citizens work in the fields of tourism, trade, maritime transport, coal and petroleum, and a small number of them are engaged in business. There are also few Ukrainians who belong to the mixed Ukrainian-Vietnamese families.

The places of compact residence of the citizens of Ukraine in Vietnam are cities of Hanoi (about 50 people), Nha Trang (about 100), Vung Tau (about 100), and Ho Chi Minh (50). Likewise, Ukrainian community tends to be mixed with Russian community in Vietnam however.
