Utilita Energy

Utilita Energy is an electricity and gas supplier operating in the United Kingdom. Utilita began trading in 2003  specialising in Smart Pay As You Go Energy. It is one of the UK's largest energy suppliers by market share.

As of January 2021, Utilita has over 800,000 customers,[1] representing a 2.6% share in the domestic market.[2]

Utilita has a 4.2 out of 5 "great" rating on Trustpilot, with 66% ranking it 5/5 stars, as of January 2021.[3]

Company history

Utilita Energy began trading in 2003. The company's founder and Chief Executive Officer is Bill Bullen.

In 2008, Utilita became the first energy company in the UK to install a Smart Meter.[4]

By 2014, the company had reached 100,000 customers.

In 2017 Utilita not only welcomed their 500,000th customer, but they also launched their customer rewards programme  Utilita Extra.[5]

In 2018 Utilita installed its 1,500,000th smart meter and launched its Uswitch award-winning app  My Utilita.[6] In the same year, the company also opened their first Energy Hub in Gosport, Hampshire.

In 2019 Utilita became a Patron of The Price's Trust Charity and the Newcastle Arena was renamed the Utilita Arena.[7] As well as this, the company also expanded into the telecoms sector with the launch of Utilita Mobile  a SIM only mobile product.[8]

In 2020, the Arena Birmingham became the Utilita Arena Birmingham[9] and Utilita launched the Energy High 5 campaign to help households save money and the environment.[10]

Software development

In 2018 Utilita launched their energy management app My Utilita, which has since gone on to receive Uswitch's Best App two years running. My Utilita also remains one of the highest rated energy apps in Google Play and the App Store.[11]

The company have continued to develop My Utilita  adding the POWER UP feature in late 2018. This allows their smart PAYG customers access discretionary credit and pay it back on their terms.[12]

In 2020, two additional features were added to My Utilita  a torch to read the meter in dark spaces and the Winter Savings feature to help customers save for the colder months.

Energy Hubs

Utilita began a national rollout of high street Energy Hubs in 2018, allowing customers to top-up, check their account and get energy-saving advice in store. As of December 2020, Utilita has Energy Hubs located in Gosport, Southampton, Isle of Wight, Derby, West Bromwich, and Edinburgh.[13]
