Background

A fourth studio album was teased in July 2020 when Scott posted an image on Instagram with the caption "Utopia".[8] The following month on Astroworld's second anniversary, he took to Twitter and thanked his fans for supporting him during his career with his last words being "See You in Utopia" and a possible 2021 release date.[9] In October 2019, Scott released the album's lead single "Highest in the Room"[10] accompanied by a music video and was later remixed by Lil Baby and Rosalía which was released on Scott's compilation album JackBoys featuring his Cactus Jack members.[11] The single was followed by "Franchise" featuring Young Thug and M.I.A. which also had a remix with Future. "Franchise" was previously teased as "White Tee" on Scott and his DJ Chase B's Apple Music radio .WAV.[12] Snippets of two other songs titled "Niagara Falls", featuring 21 Savage, and "Vision", were also teased on the radio. However, it is unknown if the two songs will be included on the album. In January 2021, "Niagara Falls" and "Vision" were leaked on Spotify but were both taken down.

Recording

Recording for the album began sometime in 2019 following the release of "Highest in the Room".

In March 2020, he was seen recording a beat from scratch and posted on his Instagram story. In December, Scott was reported to be recording in Mexico with Don Toliver, WondaGurl, and Hit-Boy while further teasing a collaboration with Roddy Ricch would be on the way.
