Verificat
Verificat is a fact-checking project created in April 2019 to combat misinformation in Catalonia.[1] Created as an independent non-profit, the project was inspired by the platforms of the Poynter Institute's International Fact-Checking Network.[2] Verificat publishes copyleft-licensed content, in order that other journalists can make free use the content they produce.
Journalists Alba Tobella, Carola Solé and Roser Toll — having studied at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and with experience as Latin America correspondents for Agence France-Presse, the Associated Press and the Agencia EFE — began the project before the Barcelona municipal election campaign of 2019.[3] The project has the support of Catalonia's journalists association, Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya and Barcelona's private Ramon Llull University.[1] In addition to checking the accuracy of reported facts, Verificat also has a data journalism team and a technology team.[3] The data experts are the Storydata collective led by Eli Vivas and Carina Bellver, and the technology branch is led by Lorenzo Marini, founder of the startup Precept.[1]
