WJOY carries the nationally syndicated music service "America's Best Music" provided by Westwood One. WJOY is one Burlington's oldest radio stations, first signing on the air on September 14, 1946. The transmitter, studios and offices are located on Joy Drive in South Burlington, Vermont, near Interstate 189.[2]
History
WJOY signed on at noon on September 14, 1946 from 633 Main Street in Burlington. In April 1961, the FCC increased WJOY to 1,000 watts of power, up from 250 watts previously. The following year WJOY-FM (which later became WQCR, now WOKO) was added. By the late sixties, the space occupied by WJOY on Main Street in Burlington was needed by The University of Vermont for a new dormitory complex. New, larger, facilities for WJOY were constructed in the winter of 1967, and operations commenced from there in March 1968. Hall Communications purchased WJOY, along with its FM sister station, in 1983.[3]
