In January 1941, army personnel began broadcasting music over a small transmitter located in the basement of the army barracks. [1] This small, unofficial, irregular and unlicensed radio broadcasting station is considered to be the first American army entertainment station. On December 7, 1941, the Panama station was closed so that it couldn't be used as a homing beacon for incoming enemy bombers due to the Pearl Harbor incident. The radio station was re-opened with new imported equipment a little over a year later at the same location in Fort Clayton in March 1941. Four broadcast transmitters were available including WVL, WVUB, and WVUC. WVUB ran under the 1420 kHz short wave band as a parallel relay to WVL. Sometime around the year 1971, these shortwave stations were closed, however the programming would stay on the air for many years after on FM Band 2.

In 2008, WVUB was recognized as Station of the Year by the Indiana Broadcasters Association. Shortly after, in 2009, they would receive the Community Service Award from the Indiana Broadcasters Association. [2]

WVUB is licensed by the FCC to broadcast in the HD Radio (hybrid) format.[3] Operating as a Non-Commercial Educational station, it is a Class B, A Zone I or I-A station, with 25 kW-50kW ERP and a class contour distance 39km-52km.[4]

WVUB's tower is a GTOWER registered to the Board of Trustees for the Vincennes University, with a site elevation of 152.4 meters (500 ft), a structure height of 171.3 meters (562 ft), an overall height of 172.5 meters (566 ft) and an ASML overall height of 324.9 meters (1,066 ft).

Blazer 91.1 WVUB is the only 50,000 watt station in Knox County, reaching an audience all over a 50 mile radius and beyond. WVUB HD1 simulcasts their 91.1 MHz Hot AC FM station. Blazer Jazz, WVUB HD2 features a mix of Smooth Jazz and Pop/Rock Artists to form a "soft blend" similar to what you would hear on a Major Market Smooth Jazz station. Blazer Bilingue, WVUB HD3 broadcasts bilingual English and Spanish programming, featuring a combination of Regional Mexican and Latin music. Designed in part to bridge the gap between the Hispanic and non-Spanish speaking population, Blazer Bilinque is the only bilingual radio station in Southwestern Indiana/Southeastern Illinois. [5]
