On April 23, 2019, the original solo version of the song was released on YouTube and Soundcloud. One month later it was released as a single by Victor Victor Worldwide & Republic Records.[4]
Remixes
After gaining popularity, the song was remixed by rappers ASAP Ferg, Pusha T, Rico Nasty, Kiing Shooter, Skepta, Headie One, Dave East and Meek Mill.[5][6] On July 14, Pop Smoke teased the official remix of "Welcome to the Party" with Nicki Minaj, at his album release party.[7][8] The official remix was released on August 15.[9] American rapper Rico Nasty also released a remix of the song titled "Welcome to the Party (NastyMix)" on August 1.[10][11] A remix with British rapper Skepta was also released.[12]
Composition
The song has been labelled "chaotic"[2] and features "sinister and violent" lyrics, with Pop Smoke's voice singled out for being "preposterously"[2] and "hauntingly" deep.[3] Complex magazine's Jessica McKinney called the song "distinctly Brooklyn", due to Pop Smoke's thick accent and a drill beat from producer 808Melo,[2] which Pitchfork noted as being "haphazard and bass-heavy".[3]
