Westminster International University in Tashkent

Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) is the first international university in Uzbekistan and first in Central Asia to offer Western education, with United Kingdom (UK) qualifications. WIUT was established in 2002 in partnership between the "UMID" Presidential Foundation, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan, and the University of Westminster in London (UoW).

WIUT`s mission is to provide International Standards of Education and Research Opportunities that contribute to the Intellectual, Social and Professional development of the Central Asian communities as well as Global Community.

Background

WIUT provides programmes at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. WIUT faculty have international degrees and experience in international organizations. Many faculty have earned doctoral degrees from leading universities in Australia, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Japan, Spain and USA.

University schools (academic structure)

Starting from 2020, the University transitioned to a new Academic Administration Structure. According to the new established structure there are 3 schools operating at WIUT: (i) School of Business and Economics (SOBE); (ii) School of Law, Technology and Education (SOLTE), and (iii) The Graduate School (GS), offering doctoral programmes. Each school contains academic departments with Subject Areas.

The university offers the following degree courses:

Pre-foundation course: The course in Pre-Foundation Studies (CPFS) is designed for students of Tashkent lyceums/colleges who wish to study at Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT). The main purpose of the CPFS is to improve the English and Mathematics skills of future entrants to WIUT. The modules are delivered in part-time mode, where the same Academic Quality Assurance process and academic delivery structure with WIUT university courses are applied. The classes are held in the first or second halves of a day, depending on the time of classes for students in their lyceums/colleges. The modules are divided into 2 Levels: CPFS Level 1 and Level 2. Upon successful completion of both modules at CPFS Level 2, students can apply for the entrance to Level 3 – International Foundation Studies – which is the first year of the University studies.

  • Certificate of International Foundation Studies (CIFS)
The Certificate in International Foundation Studies (CIFS) is a one-year course. The aim of the course is to prepare students for successful study at honours degree level. As a University of Westminster award it is recognized as an entry qualification for degree courses in many universities around the world.
Students who successfully complete the CIFS will automatically qualify for progression onto one of Westminster International University in Tashkent degree-level programmes. They will also qualify for entry to related courses at the University of Westminster in London.

Undergraduate degree courses:

  • Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Business Management
The BA (Hons) in Business Management is a three-year full time course. It is based upon the BA (Honours) Business course delivered in the UK by the Harrow Business School of the University of Westminster, but has been adapted to suit the local context. BA Business Management has two pathways, namely The BA (Hons) Business Management with Marketing and BA (Hons) Business Management with Finance. The course will prepare students for management and entrepreneurship roles in different types of organizations and provide a foundation for understanding how businesses operate. It also aims to develop the transferable skills such as leadership skills, business perceptiveness and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics with Finance (BSc Economics with Finance)
The BSc (Hons) Economics with Finance is a three-year full-time course. It is based upon the BSc (Hons) Business Economics course delivered in the UK by the Westminster Business School of the University of Westminster, adapted to suit the local context. The course enables students to understand the interactions between the economy and financial systems, while providing theories, tools, and techniques which will enable them to pursue a career in economics, finance and related industries. The combination of economics (major) and finance (minor) provides an excellent platform from which WIUT graduates can be successful in competitive job markets. The BSc (Honours) Economics with Finance aims to create graduates who are able to conduct formal modelling of economic relationships, test hypotheses against data, and think critically about economic and financial problems and policy issues.
  • BSc (Hons) in Finance is a rigorous programme of study which will equip you with a financial foundation and quantitative skills, as well as an understanding of the logic behind the use of specific finance techniques and financial decision-making at financial organisations and functions. You will learn to think analytically and be able to critically evaluate issues in finance from a variety of perspectives. You will gain valuable insights into the socio-economic, legal and professional contexts within which finance operates. Along with developing key analytical abilities, the course is designed to enhance your team-working, problem-solving, communication skills and business awareness that are highly important in an intertwined global financial world.
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business Information Systems (BSc Business Information Systems)
The BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems is a three-year full-time course. It is based upon the BSc (Hons) Business Computing course delivered in the UK jointly by the Harrow Business School and the Harrow School of Computer Science of the University of Westminster. The BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems aims to develop students with skills in the areas of systems analysis and database development as well as finance and marketing with an awareness of a wide range of managerial and organizational issues. The underlying philosophy of the course is to emphasize the close relationship between information technology and business with the application of the relevant theory underpinning IT enabled business practices.
  • Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Commercial Law (BA Commercial Law)
The BA (Hons)Commercial Law is a three-year full-time course. The BA Commercial Law, programme consists of subject areas found on an English law degree such as that taught at the University of Westminster in London. However, at WIUT the focus in many modules is primarily Uzbek law with some English (or other legal jurisdiction) content to enable a comparison between two different legal systems. The course balances the need to provide a basic understanding of Uzbek law, with a commercial and international focus, within a broadly liberal legal curriculum. The course has been designed by the Law School of the University of Westminster; it focuses on International and Business Law.

Postgraduate degree programs:

  • MA in International Business Management - The programme reflects the main functional areas of business – accounting, marketing, finance, economics, information technology, human resources and strategy and provides an opportunity for graduates to develop their knowledge and management skills. It integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application.
  • MSc in Applied Economics- aims to provide students with a deep, systematic, and structured knowledge of economic theories and principles, as well as the practical skills which will enable them to develop a career as an economist or economic consultant. Students develop the ability to understand contemporary economic problems in micro and macroeconomics, development economics, and finance, as well as learning to apply advanced knowledge to analyse policy measures and their impact on government, businesses, and citizens’ welfare. Additionally, students learn to communicate the outcomes of econometric analyses and give advice to policymakers and business leaders to assist them in making better decision making.
  • LLM in International Commercial Law

LLM in International Commercial Law is an internationally recognized master's degree awarded by the University of Westminster (London). It is targeted at working professionals who wish to blend learning and working. It covers those aspects of law that commercial law practitioners could expect to encounter on a regular basis. This course is unique in Uzbekistan and Central Asia in terms of providing opportunity to study commercial law in accordance with international standards.

  • MA in Human Resources Management- is designed to provide an understanding of the field of human resources to take up careers in a wide range of industries in both public and private sectors in Uzbekistan and globally. The MA HRM and Talent Development aims to attract candidates with diverse academic backgrounds and working experience and desire to shift their career to Human Resources. This programme is also beneficial for line managers who can learn about managing people and developing talent of their employees.The MA in HRM and Talent Development will equip with the tools to critically examine and apply contemporary approaches to employee resourcing, performance management, strategy for HRM and talent development within organisations.
  • MSc in Business Intelligence and Analytics- is designed to focus on data science that addresses the business need to advance data organisation and information gathering, go insight into information and exploit knowledge hidden in routinely collected data in order to improve decision-making. The course is more technology focused, and stretches the data-mining and decision-sciences theme to the broader agenda of business intelligence.
  • MSc in Public Health Science- is designed for those who are planning to gain knowledge and practical skills in the health and disease-related fieldprovides intensive education in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Statistics to prepare professionals to protect and enhance the health and well-being of populations through health promotion and disease prevention initiatives. This course will enable students to conduct research projects in medicine, life sciences, or social sciences.
  • Posgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning- aims of the PGC in Teaching and Learning is to provide a wide range of opportunities for participants professional development. This includes support for immediate teaching practice and related concerns, exchanging advice and guidance and the opportunity to share experiences with peers, engagement with research in education, assistance in planning for learning, teaching and assessment.

All courses are validated by the University of Westminster (UK), which awards the qualification. The Certificate in Foundation Studies is accepted as an entry qualification for UK degrees. The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science are standard UK three-year programmes.
