Davis was one of The Apawamis Club's earliest resident pros arriving in the spring of 1900. He had planned the course in Shinnecock Hills. At the time of his death, he was credited as being the oldest resident golf professional in the United States and the first to have come to America to make a living as a golfer. Davis and his family were residents of Rye, New York, at the time of his death in 1902 from pneumonia.[5]
