Xavier Rathan-Mayes

Xavier Rathan-Mayes (born April 29, 1994)[1] is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Agua Caliente Clippers of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the Florida State Seminoles.[2]

High school career

Born in Markham, Ontario, he started playing high school basketball at Christian Faith Center Academy in North Carolina. However, the NCAA was declining to accept credits received from the school, prompting him to transfer to Huntington Prep School in West Virginia. At Huntington Prep School, he played with current NBA player Andrew Wiggins, and he was considered a top 30 player in his class.[3]

Redshirt Freshman

Notable games Xavier had were against North Carolina, when he scored 35 points; against Miami Hurricanes, when he also scored 35 points, including 30 points in the last 4:38 of the game;[4] and 30 points against Clemson.[5] He averaged 14.9 points per game, becoming only the second freshman to lead Florida State in scoring. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team. [6]

Professional career

Westchester Knicks (2017–2018)

After going undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft he joined the New York Knicks for the 2017 NBA Summer League. He signed with the Knicks on a non-guaranteed contract.

Memphis Grizzlies (2018)

On March 5, 2018, the Memphis Grizzlies signed Rathan-Mayes to a 10-day contract.[7] Rathan-Mayes made his NBA debut on the same day, contributed eight points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes for the Grizzlies in a 98–100 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.[8]

AEK Athens (2018)

In June 2018, Rathan-Mayes joined the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2018 NBA Summer League.[9] On July 28, 2018, Rathan-Mayes signed a one-year deal with AEK Athens of the Greek Basket League.[10] On October 24, 2018, Rathan-Mayes recorded 24 points, along with six assists, leading AEK to a 93–86 win over Brose Bamberg.[11]

Texas Legends (2019)

On January 8, 2019, the Texas Legends acquired Rathan-Mayes from Westchester Knicks for Jameel Warney.[12] In 25 games played for the Legends, he averaged 14.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Bnei Herzliya (2019)

On March 28, 2019, Rathan-Mayes joined Bnei Herzliya of the Israeli Premier League, signing for the rest of the season.[13] On April 22, 2019, Rathan-Mayes recorded a season-high 28 points, shooting 6-of-11 from three-point range, along with five rebounds and three assists in a 76–72 win over Ironi Nahariya. He was subsequently named Israeli League Round 28 MVP.[14]

Hamilton Honey Badgers (2019)

Rathan-Mayes played with the Hamilton Honey Badgers in the 2019 season of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). He led the team to the finals, where his team lost to Saskatchewan Rattlers. He scored 24 points in the final.

Second stint with the Texas Legends (2019)

On October 26, 2019, Rathan-Mayes was included in the training camp roster of the Texas Legends.[15] Rathan-Mayes was later included in the opening night roster of the Texas Legends.[16]

Agua Caliente Clippers (2019–present)

On December 3, 2019, the Agua Caliente Clippers announced that they had acquired Rathan-Mayes from the Texas Legends for the returning rights to Demarcus Holland and a 3rd round draft pick in the 2020 NBA G League Draft.[17]

National team career

Rathan-Mayes represented his country, Canada, twice in international competition. He participated at the 2012 U-18 Americas Championship and the 2013 U-19 World Championship.[18]

Personal life

His stepfather is former NBA player Tharon Mayes.[19]
