  • 10 February – Paris peace treaties are signed between the World War II Allies and Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Finland.

  • 29 March – Nationalist "tribesmen" began a revolt (Malagasy uprising) in the eastern part of Madagascar, against French rule.
  • 6 May – In Moramanga, the military machine-gun Mouvement Democratique de la Renovation Malagache (MDRM) officials detained in wagons, killing 124 to 160 people.
  • 11 July – Exodus (ship) departs France to Palestine with 4,500 Jewish Holocaust survivor refugees.
