March
  • March 24 – The first DVDs are released in the United States with the launch of the format there, with Twister being the first release. The first full wave of titles follow on March 26.

May
  • May – The "DVD Consortium" is replaced by the DVD Forum, open to all other companies.[1]

August
  • August 29 – Online DVD rental Netflix in the United States is incorporated.
