After completing negotiations for a deal on the phone, Jon goes out onto the balcony of his office, leaves his phone and an envelope on the table, and calmly steps over the edge to his death. Meanwhile, Gary is at the doctor's for a regular check-up to see if his breast cancer is still in remission. When Eddie gets the call he is packing a suitcase and about to leave his workaholic wife Katherine for his lover. The gang reflects on the events the day before Jon's suicide: Maggie was in remission for six months before her cancer aggressively returned. Jon received a voice message from Jeri (played by Constance Zimmer) demanding that he stop calling her. The guys get together for a basketball but not before ripping on Gary for dating a series of women then dumping them for no reason. After the tense call, Jon confides in Ashley that a subway vote they needed isn’t going to happen, and therefore their business is likely going under. Rome nails a pitch to make a commercial for Super Bowl LIII and he was happy about it until he wasn't. Gary feeds a stray dog and names it Colin, and was dismayed that the animal shelter would euthanized him and older dogs if they're not adopted. As Gary waits for the results of his screening, he made arrangements to adopt Colin. On the day of the tragic event, Jon leaves for work while Delilah and Eddie discuss having an affair. Meanwhile in his final moments, Jon dismisses Ashley, finishes his call, then calls Eddie advising them all to "love each other" then jumps off the balcony, but not before buying Ashley a ticket to Spain.

Upon hearing of Jon's suicide, Jeri feels so guilty that she inadvertently contributed to Jon's despair, that she worked tirelessly with Ashley to get the mass transit vote back on the table. And though Jeri assured Delilah that the rescheduled vote would come out in her favor, the city council ultimately decided not to go through with installing a new subway stop near Jon’s old apartment. Not willing to take that risk, Delilah sold the property to an interested buyer minutes before the vote took place.

To help her along, Delilah tracks down a food-and-beverage expert, who procures them a liquor license and a bartending staff. What hinders the grand opening was Regina finding out from her mother that the money came from her Uncle Neil. This lead Rome to call up Maggie to help his despondent wife, who later told her story on how she was sexually assaulted by her uncle. Meanwhile, Gary unsuccessfully tries to track down Barbera Morgan, another associate of Jon's to find more answers about his friend's dismay; so he hires a private investigator, still yielding no results. The morning after her breakdown, Regina plans to confront her uncle, but he died at the hospital, then she and mom had a fraught conversation regarding Neil's past. February 21, 2019 (2019-02-21)5.25[40]
The mystery woman (possibly Barbera Morgan) creepily watches the Dixon house. She goes as far as talking her way into the house by making up a story about having met Sophie at the 5K a few weeks back. Over at the hospital, Maggie undergoes surgery with Gary as her moral support. As Maggie was escorted to the operating room, Gary rushes to get the rosary. On the way back a woman steals the parking spot that Gary was about to take. It was none other than Maggie's mother Patricia. For a while, she and Gary get into a tiff. He later apologizes but Patricia wouldn't accept them. It wasn't until they were in the hospital church that patricia finally breaks down, fearing she would lose Maggie. They later stood beside Maggie as she wakes up from her operation the next morning. Meanwhile, Rome finishes his screenplay, but he won't let anyone see it until it's proofed. He misplaced his screenplay at the hospital, and he eventually finds it in the hands of a teenager named PJ, who loved his screenplay as he relates to the storyline. Shortly thereafter, Rome calls the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for information on volunteering. Regina gets a positive review of her restaurant on the newspaper, but was dismayed it focuses on the involvement of Andrew and gives her very little of the credit. Eddie and Katherine prepare to sign the divorce papers, but just as they do, Theo has a nightmare.
1717"Goodbye"James GriffithsDJ NashFebruary 28, 2019 (2019-02-28)5.26[41]
After rekindling a spark with Katherine and deciding not to go through with their divorce, Eddie realizes that he and Theo’s mom cannot restart their marriage with any secrets or lies between them. Delilah is ready to let the whole Barbara Morgan mystery go, but Sophie says the new baby might want answers someday. So Delilah returns to the house she and Gary previous visited, and it turns out that the woman is Barbara. She then tells her the story of how she dated Jon's roommate Dave and then shows Delilah the video Jon made. It was apparent that Jon and Dave bought tickets to a flight leaving Logan International Airport on September 11, 2001, but that Jon just missed the flight because he ran to an airport shop for some wine. That flight was one of two that terrorists used to take down the World Trade Center towers. Since then Jon had survivor's guilt and has stopped talking to Barbera after learning she was pregnant. Delilah then had a flashback to when she and Jon met moments after. When Delilah tells her friends what she’s learned, Maggie points out that it was likely the totality of Jon’s issues—-including his financial problems and his grief over Dave that led him to choose to end his life. Later, Maggie learns she is cancer-free, which sparks tears of joy from Gary and laughs from Maggie herself. After helping Maggie settle into her new apartment, Gary is accompanied to Jon’s grave for a proper goodbye the two friends never got.

Development

It's an optimistic look at how the loss of a friend is the impetus for the other seven to finally start living, to make a promise to him and to themselves to finally be honest about what's really going on,... I know in my own life, my friend's passing is a constant reminder to keep things in perspective.

—Creator D. J. Nash, creator on the underlying themes of the series.[66]

On August 18, 2017, ABC landed a series titled A Million Little Things with a put pilot commitment, to be written by DJ Nash, who would serve as executive producer alongside Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor. The series was described as "being in the tone of The Big Chill," with the title stemming from the popular adage, "Friendship isn't a big thing – it's a million little things."[66] Nash came up with the idea for the series following his single-camera comedy pilot Losing It. He said that "Sometimes in comedy, you have to apologize for adding drama, which is why I was so thrilled to see ABC's passion for a drama that has comedy".[66] ABC officially ordered the series to pilot in January 2018,[67] and the show was officially picked up to series on May 9, 2018.[19] The series is produced by ABC Studios and Kapital Entertainment.[19] On February 5, 2019, during the TCA press tour, A Million Little Things was renewed for a second season.[68][2][3] On August 8, 2019, it was announced that ABC had ordered a full season for the second season.[69] On May 21, 2020, ABC renewed the series for a third season which premiered on November 19, 2020.[4][5] At the PaleyFest New York panel, Nash announced that the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement will be part of the storylines for the third season.[70]

Casting

On February 6, 2018, David Giuntoli was cast as Eddie.[6] A week later, Romany Malco was cast as Rome.[7] By the end of the month, Christina Ochoa had joined the cast as Ashley,[10] along with Anne Son as Katherine,[71] Christina Moses as Regina Howard,[9] and James Roday Rodriguez as Gary.[13] In early March 2018, Stéphanie Szostak was cast as Delilah,[14] while Lizzy Greene was cast as Sophie Dixon.[17] That month, it was also revealed that Ron Livingston had joined the series in an unspecified role,[15] which was revealed with the series order in May to be the character Jon.[19] On June 27, 2018, Grace Park was cast as Katherine, replacing Anne Son who was in the original pilot.[11][12]

Filming

Production on the pilot took place from March 12 to 29, 2018,[72] in Vancouver, British Columbia.[73] Principal photography for the first season began on July 24, 2018, and concluded on February 4, 2019.[74] Filming for the second season began on June 19, 2019 and ended on February 19, 2020.[75] Filming for the third season began on August 27, 2020 and is scheduled to end on May 17, 2021.[76]

Music

The soundtrack for the first season was released digitally on March 1, 2019, by Hollywood Records.[77]

Release

Broadcast

The series premiered on September 26, 2018 on ABC in the United States.[78] In Canada, the series airs on Citytv. In Turkey, the series broadcast through pay broadcaster Digiturk.[79] The second season premiered on September 26, 2019.[3]
