Bachelor in Paradise (American TV series)

Bachelor in Paradise is an American elimination-style reality competition television series, which premiered on August 4, 2014, on ABC. It is a spin-off of the American reality television shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. The show features previous contestants who have been featured on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette as they travel to a secluded paradise in Mexico where the show will take place. The show is hosted by Chris Harrison.

Production

Development and filming

In March 2013, ABC canceled Bachelor Pad after three seasons.[1] Very similar to Bachelor Pad, rejected contestants from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are isolated in a romantic paradise in an exotic tropical destination.[2] The first season was filmed in Tulum, Mexico. Beginning in season 2, the show has been filmed in Sayulita, Mexico at Playa Escondida.

The show begins with an uneven number of women and men, with there being more women. At the first rose ceremony, the six men are given a rose to hand out to a woman they’d like to spend more time getting to know in paradise. The women left without roses are immediately sent home. New men are then brought to the beach, so at the next rose ceremony, women can give a rose to a man they'd like to spend more time with and the remaining men are sent home. For seven weeks, this set up alternates between new men or new women joining the cast.

ABC renewed Bachelor in Paradise for a sixth season on February 5, 2019.[3]

On August 5, 2019, the series was renewed for a seventh season, and was postponed till 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic; however, the production dates are affected with the international travel restrictions as it will be part for the 2020–21 television schedule.[4][5]

Misconduct allegations

During initial filming of season 4, production was halted due to allegations of sexual misconduct between two contestants—DeMario Jackson and Corinne Olympios.[6] After an internal investigation, it was determined that there was no misconduct and filming resumed shortly after.[7]

After Paradise

Beginning in 2015, ABC began airing Bachelor in Paradise: After Paradise, a regular weekly live after show. Chris Harrison and Jenny Mollen co-hosted the show starring a celebrity fan and one of the Bachelor in Paradise cast members.[8] Season 2 saw the introduction of a new host, comedian and talk show host, Michelle Collins and also introduced as a co-host is the star from season 17 of The Bachelor, Sean Lowe.[9]

3 August 2, 2016 (2016-08-02) – September 6, 2016 (2016-09-06) Carly Waddell & Evan Bass Yes No Waddell and Bass were married on June 17, 2017 in Mexico.[15] They live together in Nashville, Tennessee and have a daughter [16] In November 2019, they had their second child together, a son. [17] They announced their separation on December 23, 2020.[18]
Amanda Stanton & Josh Murray Yes No Stanton and Murray called off their engagement in December 2016.[19][20]
Lace Morris & Grant Kemp Yes No Morris and Kemp announced their breakup on November 29, 2016.[21]
4 August 14, 2017 – September 11, 2017 Taylor Nolan & Derek Peth Yes No On August 31, while the show was still airing, it was reported that Nolan and Peth got engaged during the taping of Bachelor in Paradise's aftershow.[22] They called off their engagement in June 2018.[23] Peth later rejoined the show for its sixth season.
Raven Gates & Adam Gottschalk No Yes On the reunion, it was revealed that Gates and Gottschalk are in a relationship.[24] They got engaged on May 31, 2019.[25]
Lacey Mark & Daniel Maguire No No On the reunion, it was revealed that Mark and Maguire had ended their relationship.[26]
5 August 7, 2018 – September 11, 2018 Krystal Nielson & Chris Randone Yes No The two got married in June 2019, during the filming of the 6th season of Bachelor in Paradise. The couple announced their separation in February 2020.[27]
Jenna Cooper & Jordan Kimball Yes No On the reunion, Cooper and Kimball announced their wedding was due to set for June 9, 2019, but a day before the reunion aired, it was announced that Jordan had broken up with Jenna after it was revealed that Jenna was allegedly cheating on him the whole time.[28] It was later revealed that all of the evidence alleging that Jenna had cheated was fabricated.[29]
Kendall Long & Joe Amabile No No Although initially split during the show, it was revealed at the reunion that the two were dating. The couple announced their split in January 2020.[30]
Astrid Loch & Kevin Wendt No Yes Although initially split during the show, it was revealed at the reunion that the two are dating. They got engaged on August 28, 2019.
Annaliese Puccini & Kamil Nicalek No No At the reunion, Nicalek broke up with Puccini onstage.[28]
6 August 5, 2019 – September 17, 2019 Demi Burnett & Kristian Haggerty Yes No After Burnett proposed to Haggerty during the show, Haggerty proposed to Burnett during the reunion. On October 31, 2019, it was revealed on their Instagram accounts that they had called off their engagement. Burnett and Haggerty were the first same-sex couple to be featured on the American version of the show.[31]

Bachelor in Paradise Australia was commissioned by Network Ten in late 2017.[48] In Germany premiered on May 9, 2018 on RTL.[49]
