Abbas Ahmed Atwi

Abbas Ahmed Atwi (Arabic: عباس أحمد عطوي‎; born 12 September 1979) is a Lebanese professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Lebanese Premier League club Nejmeh.

Not to be confused with Abbas Ali Atwi, also known as Onika.

Making his debut for Lebanon in 2002, Atwi was the all-time most capped player for his country with 84 international caps, before being surpassed by Hassan Maatouk in 2020; he played for the national team for over 13 years, until his final match in 2016.[2] Atwi is not related to fellow Lebanese footballer Abbas Ali Atwi, who is also known as Onika.[2]

Club career

Atwi started his career for Nejmeh in the 1997–98 season and has played for 10 years for the club, playing more than 400 matches and scoring more than 100 goals in his 10 year stay.[3] He terminated his contract on 18 January 2017, due to problems with the technical staff.[4]

In 2017 he joined Shabab Arabi, before moving to Shabab Sahel on 4 January 2018, scoring four goals and making five assists in his first season.[5] On 17 July 2020, Atwi rejoined Nejmeh on a two-year deal.[6]

International career

Atwi began to play in 2002 for Lebanon in a match against Jordan. He appeared in every FIFA World Cup qualification at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions. Atwi was the most-capped player for his country with 84 official matches, before being surpassed by Hassan Maatouk in 2020.[7]

Personal life

On 9 January 2021, Atwi tested positive for COVID-19, amid its pandemic in Lebanon.[8] He fully recovered on 14 January.[9]
