The town was founded on February 13, 2006, when the towns of Echigawa and Hatashō merged. The name "Aishō" combines the first character in "Echigawa" (知川) and the second character in "Hatashō" ().

In October 2016, the town had an estimated population of 20,730. The total area is 37.98 km².

Neighboring communities

The town borders the cities of Hikone and Higashiōmi and the towns of Kōra, Taga and Toyosato in Inukami District.
