It covers an area of 2.68 km², including a land area of 2.68 km².[1] The area is entirely inland, but many homes have coastal views.[2]

Aotea is a suburb of Porirua.

Only 10 people lived in the Aotea area in 1996. With the building of new housing developments, the suburb's population increased to 120 in 2006, 450 in 2013, and 270 in 2018.[3]

The suburb now has two children's playgrounds and a retirement home.

Demography

Aotea has an estimated population of 3,450.

It had a population density of 1,287.90 people per km² as of 2019.[4]

As of the 2018 census, the median age was 30.3, the median income was $52,400, 22.5% of people earned over $100,00, 36.6% had a Bachelor's Degree or higher, and 2.5% of the workforce was unemployed.[3]

Ethnically, the population was 70.6% New Zealand European, 22% Asian, 8.2% Māori, and 7.2% Pacific peoples, with 2.6% being of other ethnicities; 31.8% were born overseas. Religiously, the population was 44.6% non-religious, 42.2% Christian, 4.0% Buddhist, and 1.1% Hindu.[3]

Economy

In 2018, 8% of the workforce worked in healthcare, 7.5% worked in education, 6% worked in construction, 4.2% worked in hospitality, 4.0% worked in transport, and 2.9% of the workforce worked in manufacturing.[3]

Transportation

As of 2018, among those who commute to work, 63.8% drove a car and 4.9% rode in a car..

Although Aotea is close to Porirua's main transit hub, less than 1% walked, ran, biked or took public transport to work.[3]

Education

Aotea College is a co-educational state secondary school for Year 9 to 13 students,[5] with a roll of 1083 as of March 2020.[6] It was founded in 1978.[7]
