Onepoto, Wellington

Onepoto is a suburb of Porirua City in New Zealand. It is bounded to the north by Whitireia Park, a large park which is slowly being returned to native bush, and to the east by the Porirua Harbour.

Onepoto covers a land area of 2.24 km²,[1] including an area of coast.[2]

The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage translates Onepoto as "short beach".[3]

History

The estimated population of Onepoto reached 1,970 in 1996, 1,940 in 2001, 1,920 in 2006, 2,240 in 2013, and 2,490 in 2018.[4]

Demography

Onepoto has an estimated population of 1,990.

It had a population density of 887.92 people per km² in 2019.[5]

As of the 2018 census, the median age was 27.7, the median income was $36,800, .0% of people earned over $100,00, 24.1% had a Bachelor's Degree or higher, and 4.3% of the workforce was unemployed.[4]

Ethnically, the population was 70.1% New Zealand European, 32.2% Māori, 18.0% Pacific peoples, 4.5% Asian, and 3% identified with other ethnicities; 17.2% were born overseas.[4]

Religiously, the population was 52.7% non-religious and 35.1% Christian, and there were small Buddhist and Hindu populations.[4]

Economy

In 2018, 11.9% of the workforce worked in healthcare, 11.3% worked in construction, 10.7% worked in education, 4.5% worked in manufacturing, 4.5% worked in transport and 3.9% worked in hospitality.[4]

Transportation

As of 2018, among those who commute to work, 70.9% drove a car, 4.7% rode in a car, 0.9% used a bike, and 0.9% walked or ran. No one used public transport.[4]
