Writing and production

American rapper and Migos member Offset is featured on "Cap".

"Cap" was produced by American record producers Diego Ave, Go Grizzly and Mally Mall.[1] Offset wrote and recorded a verse to the instrumental.[2] KSI was played the instrumental with Offset's verse during a recording studio session with the song's producers in Los Angeles, United States, at the end of 2019.[2] KSI "fucked with it a lot" and wrote and recorded both a chorus and a verse for the song.[2] Offset "thought it was sick" and gave KSI authorisation to include the song on his debut studio album at the beginning of 2020.[3]

Speaking about collaborating with Offset, KSI said, "Offset has always been someone who I would love to have on a song, but I never thought I'd get the opportunity to have him on a song."[1] KSI continued, "It was quite surreal he said yes to me in the first place, because obviously I’m a YouTuber. I didn’t think he’d say yes. I thought he’d say, 'I’m not sure this is a good thing for me.' He heard [my] music and he fucked with it. He thought it was sick. He wanted to be a part of this. He sees my hype. He sees I’m taking this seriously."[2]

Music and lyrics

"Cap" is a hip hop and trap song.[4] Constructed in verse–chorus form, the song runs for 3 minutes and 11 seconds (3:11).

In the song, KSI addresses fake people and those that have deceived him, with lyrics including, "I can tell the fake from the fraud" and "I can't be no friends with no cap".[1][5][6] KSI explained the meaning of his lyrics for an episode of Genius' video interview series "Verified", released on 26 June 2020.[1] KSI told Genius, "I wrote this song about certain people in my life, especially people who have back-stabbed me."[1] He continued, "People who are snakey with their movements. They just, move dodgy. I don't like when people move dodgy."[1] KSI explained, "The way I can tell someone is being fake or a fraud is literally through time. It's pretty hard to find out instantly if they just want something from you. So over time, that's when you realise what their true agendas are, and I'm pretty good at spotting that. I know when to distance myself amongst certain people. It's just traits like how they message you or how fast they reply to certain things, or just what they do, just mannerisms. I have that inkling [because] I've been fucked over in the past."[1]

Critical reception

In her review of Dissimulation for The Guardian, Kitty Empire found that "KSI just about holds his own against Offset" on "Cap".[7] GRM Daily's Courtney Wynter wrote that the song "sees [KSI] exchange bars with Offset to deliver a trap-inspired banger".[4] Louise Griffin of Metro remarked that Offset is an "iconic feature" for KSI.[6]

Commercial performance

In the United Kingdom, "Cap" debuted at number 24 on the UK Singles Chart, with first-week sales of 17,496 track-equivalent units.[8][9][10] The song spent two weeks on the chart.[9] "Cap" debuted at number 14 on the UK Hip Hop and R&B Singles Chart and number 4 on the UK Independent Singles Chart.[11][12] In Ireland, the song debuted at number 26 on the Irish Singles Chart.[13][14]

Music video

The music video for "Cap" was directed by TajvsTaj.[15] It was filmed in a warehouse in Los Angeles in March 2020.[2] KSI announced the music video via social media on 18 May 2020, followed by the release of a trailer for the music video.[16][17] The music video was released to KSI's YouTube channel on 22 May 2020 at 15:00 (UTC).[18][19] The video is shot in black and white and comprises shots of KSI and Offset in a warehouse filled with candles, before performing the song on a stage in front of an audience.[6] The video features appearances from record producers Mally Mall and Diego Ave. When asked about his favourite moment of the video shoot, KSI said, "Me and [Offset] going HAM on the chorus... Performing there was so sick."[2]
