Background

On August 30, 2019, the release day of her sixth studio album Norman Fucking Rockwell!, Del Rey announced that she had already begun work on her follow-up album,[5] revealing the title to be White Hot Forever.[6] Nearly nine months later on May 25, 2020, she posted a series of videos on Instagram in which she stated that the album title had been changed to Chemtrails over the Country Club.[7] The album was scheduled for release on September 5, 2020, but it was revealed on October 3 that the release been postponed because of vinyl production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic,[4][8] as well as due to uncertainty over whether the track "Dealer" would be included on the album.[8][9][10] Upon the announcement of the album's tracklist on January 10, 2021, it was confirmed that "Dealer" had been removed.[11]

On September 1, 2020, Del Rey posted a video on Instagram of her on set filming the visual for the album's title track and second single, "Chemtrails over the Country Club", while revealing the title of another track, "Let Me Love You like a Woman", which was released as the first single on October 16, 2020, preceding the album. She further stated that the album would be released "soon" after.[12]

In December 2020, Del Rey presented her first television performance in nine years, since her 2012 live performance on Saturday Night Live, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[13] She presented a pre-recorded performance of her single "Let Me Love You like a Woman", released almost two months prior to the performance. A few days later she performed "Silent Night" alongside "Let Me Love You like a Woman" at the Ally Coalition's annual Twitch talent show.

The eighth track on the album, "Yosemite", was originally intended to be included on Del Rey's fifth studio album, Lust for Life; however, in a 2017 interview with Zane Lowe, she stated the track was excluded from the record because "the song was too happy; we're not there yet."

Release and promotion

On December 22, 2020, Del Rey released a teaser video of the title track, "Chemtrails over the Country Club". At the end of the video it was revealed that the single and the pre-order for the album would come on January 11, 2021.[14]

Album art

On January 10, 2021, before the release of the title track, Del Rey posted the cover art and tracklist for the album.[11] She also left an Instagram comment responding to criticism from Instagram users regarding the diversity of the group of people it depicts.[15] On January 11, Target and HMV revealed an exclusive edition of the record,[16][17] along with an alternate cover art photographed by Neil Krug.[18]
