According to Del Rey, she chose "Chemtrails over the Country Club" as the title track of the album because it mentioned "all" of her "stunning girlfriends" ("who so much of the album is about") and "beautiful siblings", and also mentioned "wanting so much to be normal and realizing that when you have an overactive, eccentric mind, a record like Chemtrails is just what you're going to get."[1]
Critical reception
"Chemtrails over the Country Club" received generally positive reviews. In a review for NME, Rhian Daly described the song as "swooning" and "beautiful".[2] In contrast, Justin Curto in a review for Vulture described the song as "one of her classic dreamy love songs" and "more interesting than the middle-of-the-road lead single 'Let Me Love You Like a Woman'" but not necessarily "any more substantive", noting that Del Rey "sways and lilts through the delicate rhythm, eventually finding her way toward a glitchy bridge" but that lyrically she is "only speaking for herself" and "doesn't have much profound to say".[3] Tom Curtis-Horsfall of Giglist opined that "Where Norman Fucking Rockwell! sounded like a dying bugle call for the American Dream, 'Chemtrails over the Country Club' feels like Del Rey now wants to desperately clutch on to that forgotten world of innocence, suburbia, and naivety".[4]
Music video
The music video was directed by the BRTHR duo Alex Lee and Kyle Wrightman[6]
and features Del Rey, her sister Chuck Grant and girlfriends Dakota Raine, Valerie Vogt and Alexandria Kaye.It starts as "a stereotypical Lana Del Rey video" showing her and her friends lounging at a country club pool in a 1960s Americana style, until the music fades out,[7] the aspect ratio changes to widescreen, and the scene cuts to night time when Lana, her sister and three girlfriends turn into werewolves. This is a reference to the bestseller "Women who Run with Wolves", as well as a reference to Lana's zodiac signs juxtaposition, which is mentioned in the lyrics.
The video premiered on YouTube on January 11, 2021.
