Conewago Township, York County, Pennsylvania

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 24.7 square miles (64 km²), of which 24.4 square miles (63 km²) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km²), or 0.93%, is water.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 5,278 people, 2,005 households, and 1,499 families residing in the township. The population density was 216.1 people per square mile (83.4/km²). There were 2,113 housing units at an average density of 86.5/sq mi (33.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.21% White, 1.35% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.

There were 2,005 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.4 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $42,688, and the median income for a family was $44,856. Males had a median income of $34,198 versus $22,420 for females. The per capita income for the township was $17,703. About 1.9% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 2.9% of those age 65 or over.

Conewago Township is served by the Northeastern York School District (one of 500 public school districts in Pennsylvania and 15 public school districts in York County). Students may also attend one of the Commonwealth's public cyber charter schools at no additional cost to the family or student. The local school district pays the Pennsylvania Department of Education set tuition fee to the cyber charter school that the resident student chooses to attend. By law, Pennsylvania cyber charter school students have access to all extracurriculars and sports programs at the local public school district.[6] Alternatively, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania permits parents to home school their children or they may attend a private school. The public school district is required by Pennsylvania school code regulation to provide free transportation to local private schools that are within 10 miles of the local district's borders.[7]
